The shape of a career

Phil Hayes was a forward whose Millwall appearances are recorded across the 1956–57, 1957–58 and 1958–59 seasons. The supplied season tables show three league appearances in 1956–57, eleven in 1957–58 and one in 1958–59, plus the FA Cup replay at Gillingham on 11 December 1957. His recorded league goal came in the 2–2 home draw with Brighton & Hove Albion on 4 April 1958. These sixteen league and FA Cup appearances are the record established from these pages, rather than a claim covering every competition. After Millwall he played for Cambridge United. The 100 Years of Coconuts history project credits him with 95 goals in 134 Cambridge appearances; the competition scope of that figure is not specified. Its Phil Hayes interview preserves his recollections of playing across the forward line at Millwall and leaving Cambridge to play nearer London. His birth details and exact Cambridge spell dates remain unconfirmed. Sources: owner-supplied Millwall history book season tables, 11v11 season squads, and 100 Years of Coconuts (Coconuts TV and Robin Mansfield’s story).
